Manual Overview
Caterpillar has developed the EMCP 4 product line of Generator Set Controls, available in four versions: EMCP 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, and 4.4. This guide covers the EMCP 4.1 and 4.2 specifically, which share the same 70-pin rear connector (the EMCP 4.4 uses a different connector).
The guide covers mounting location and operating temperature range, power requirements and battery charger setup, electrical connections and wiring diagrams, winding and transformer connections, wiring requirements for shielded and communication cabling, initial operation and user orientation, viewing and adjusting setpoints via the display or Cat ET Service Tool, event and alarm configuration, and hardware installation for the Integrated Voltage Regulator (IVR) and Excitation Module.
For system operation, testing, troubleshooting, and adjusting procedures beyond installation, Caterpillar publishes a companion manual (UENR1209) for the EMCP 4.1 and 4.2 Generator Set Controls.

Wiring Schematic Notes
Power & Ground Connections
The EMCP 4.1 and 4.2 require a nominal supply of 12 VDC or 24 VDC (9-32 VDC acceptable range), with maximum power draw not exceeding 5A at 12VDC or 3.5A at 24VDC with all I/O at maximum drain. When wiring DC power, ensure only one common connection to the negative potential of the power source a single-point common ground for sensitive electronics is recommended at the negative battery terminal or Power Distribution Box. Avoid daisy-chaining power connections between devices, since this builds resistance and creates a potential difference between reference points.
EMCP Power Supply
Pin 18,52: Battery (+)
Pin 60,65: Battery (-)
Pin 50: Emergency Stop
Primary CAN Data Link (CAN 1) – 70-Pin Connector
Pin 34: CAN 1 − (Differential negative for CAN)
Pin 42: CAN 1 SH (Shield for CAN)
Pin 50: CAN 1 + (Differential positive for CAN)
Network topology is a bus with main trunk and small drops: maximum trunk length 130 ft (40m), maximum drop length 3 ft (1m), with a 120-ohm termination resistor required at both extreme ends of the main trunk.
